Keeping an eye on your current heating system will help you identify problems before the entire system breaks. By being aware of common symptoms, and hiring a professional to fix them before the system fails completely, you could be saving yourself a lot of money in the long run.

What are the most common heating system issues?

First, it’s important to note that many furnace-related issues can be prevented with annual maintenance. But if you don’t have an annual program setup and notice ANY of the following issues, call the team at Comfort Bros. immediately.

6 of the most common issues that need to be addressed:

1. A Burning smell

It’s normal for the very first use of the season to create a mild burning smell as built up dust on the system is burned off. However, if you notice a continued or ongoing burning smell – well past the initial use – such as a few hours, you should turn off the furnace immediately. You may need to simply clean or replace the filter, or it could be the sign of a much bigger problem like an overheating motor, a blockage or internal wiring issue. Those issues need to be addressed by a certified HVAC technician.

2. Noticeable Cold spots

If your heating system is relatively modern, you should not be experiencing cold spots. Cold spots are often a symptom of improperly sized system for your home, leaky or blocked ductwork, faulty thermostat or an aging system. No matter what the issue is, if you are bothered by noticeable cold spots, give the team at Comfort Bros. a call!

3. Significant Dirt Buildup

When the interior of your air handler or furnace becomes grimy, be sure to turn off the system and check the air filters. If the air filters are clean, it is very likely you have a craked heat exchanger or buildup on the burners. Don’t use your system until the issue has been resolved by a certified HVAC professional.

4. Loud and Unusual Noise

Heating systems can make a wide variety of noises, but if you hear anything irregular or loud – like banging or grinding, there is likely a part that needs to be repaired. Fan belts, unlubricated motor parts, loose parts or malfunctioning systems can all cause strange sounds and need to be immediately addressed to prevent major damage to your system.

5. A Yellow pilot light

Pilot lights should be blue in color. When you see a pilot light that is yellow, your system isn’t getting the right amount of oxygen. This can be very dangers and should be checked by a professional.

6. Blown fuses

If you notice your circuit breakers are tripped frequently when your heating system is in use, you likely have an electrical issue that could be very dangerous and damaging to your system. Call a professional right away to have your system evaluated.

The Benefits of Annual Maintenance

Did you know that most heating system problems can be prevented by performing annual maintenance? Not only that, but you’ll extend the life of your unit’s lifespan and ensure it is always working at maximum efficiency.
